Different Trains June 22-23
Posted June 8, 2019
ABCirque & Brendan Speltz present Different Trains

"Thrilling, poignant, unexpected, and utterly D.I.Y."
The New Yorker

A unique immersive performance of Steve Reich’s 20th century minimal masterpiece of the same name, Different Trains includes electronics, a string quartet led by Leah Asher with The Rhythm Method, and stunning Cirque-style choreography.

Reich wrote Different Trains while contemplating his childhood train trips in the 1940s between New York and Los Angeles. As a Jewish man, it occurred to him that similar train trips in Europe during that time had a very different and haunting implication. In three movements, Different Trains strikes an emotional connection through its narrative, whilst live music forms a dramatic soundscape that transports you to a time of instability and doubt. This show is darkly nostalgic, profoundly devastating, gut wrenching, and ultimately hopeful.

Within today's precarious sociopolitical environment, this piece offers deeply personal and urgent lessons from the past.
