Different Trains Jan 13
Posted December 28, 2018
ABCirque & Brendan Speltz Present: Stephen Reich's masterwork Different Trains performed live!

Come and watch an immersive performance of Steve Reich’s 20th century minimal masterpiece of the same name. Different Trainsincludes electronics and a string quartet, accompanied by stunning cirque-style choreography.

Reich wrote the piece while contemplating his childhood train trips in the 1940s between New York and Los Angeles. As a person of Jewish heritage, it occurred to him that similar train trips in Europe during that time had a very different and haunting implication. In each of the three movements, he explores America before WWII, Europe during the War, and again after WWII, with a soundscape of strings, pre-recorded voices, and sound effects that prove both profoundly devastating and ultimately hopeful.
