  Help Define Circus
Posted November 30, 2009

Note: Amy Cohen is the future of circus. She founded ICIRCUS as an undergraduate at Ithaca College. She's a major player in the American Youth Circus Organization, and she's just a wonderful person doing cool, interesting work to advance circus. Please help her out by responding to this request. By the way, if you're reading this website, then YES we mean you. Posted as received.

Greetings from London!

My name is Amy, and I'm currently living in London doing research about contemporary circus in the UK as a Fulbright Scholar.

One of the things I'm focusing on here is the definition of circus. I'm working to create a definition that encompasses circus—past present and future—the definitions in the British and American dictionaries are extremely limiting and don't represent ANY circus companies or artists that I know of, especially not contemporary ones. As circus and other art forms mesh, I think it is important that the sector establish a definition that people agree on. I've been talking to some companies here in the UK who go so far as to not use circus in their marketing materials because of the stigma the word holds. I think we can strengthen and represent the word (hence the sector) rather than shy away from using it. Interestingly I've been looking into definitions of "dance" and they seem to fit circus quite well…

It would be amazing if you could craft a definition of what you think circus is and email me back the information below at icecreamcohen@gmail.com. Feel free to send this to anyone else you think may want to share. Think of it as a definition that could be found in a dictionary, a concise, one-sentence description. I'm really excited to collect these definitions and find common ground between them.
