International Contemporary Circus Exposure Mar 3-5
Posted February 15, 2017
Circus Now Festival returns to NYU Skirball following two sold-out seasons, with three programs of boundary pushing contemporary circus featuring the world’s most innovative and inspired companies.

Friday, March 3, 8pm

Only Child Aerial Theater: Asylum | USA

Asylum, a theater piece performed largely in the air, examines the forgotten lives of six patients and employees of a state mental institution that was shuttered in the 1970s. The story is told using aerial acrobatics, live music, projection, and shadow work and features music composed for this production by Grammy nominee Sophie B. Hawkins. Only Child is a New York-based company of actors and acrobats who create ensemble-driven aerial theater. The company’s work integrates theater, aerial acrobatics, live music, overhead projection, shadow work, and other disciplines.

Boom! Circus |Italy/USA

In this theatrical circus show, two performers portray a cast of six characters who put on a world-class acrobatic show featuring live music, heart-touching drama and hilarious audience interaction, using hand-crafted theatrical masks in the Italian Commedia Dell'Arte tradition, complete with slackrope, Cyr wheel, and juggling.

Saturday, March 4, 8pm

Race Horse Company: Disco 3000| Finland

Disco 3000 looks at the superstar culture of modern performance art and laughs at the phenomenon through acrobatic clownery. The irreverent and dark-hued performance is infused with black humor and thrills the audience with razor sharp circus skills.

Almanac Dance Circus Theater: Leaps of Faith and Other Mistakes | USA

Leaps of Faith and Other Mistakes combines equal parts dance, circus, and theater. The work presents an absurd and intimate tapestry of sublime human idiocy, as four would-be acrobats push themselves to be “exceptional in every moment.”

Sunday, March 5, 2pm: Family-friendly performance

Nacho Flores Company: Tesseract (excerpt)| France

Franco-Spanish aerialist Nacho Flores has developed his own unique circus technique: balancing on wooden cubes. Tesseract takes us into a surrealistic world cluttered with cubes, where daily life activities become perilous when perched atop high columns.

Note: Tesseract is part of the second annual Tilt Kids Festival, a cultural event for families presented by the Cultural Services of the French Embassy and the French Institute Alliance Française.
